It’s that time of the year. Shorter days ahead, longer moments indoors, or the reverse (if summer is coming)!
Twice a year, we recommend a seasonal wardrobe swap. Once in the Fall (October or November) and again in the Spring (April). It’s more than just a routine, it’s the opportunity to reset your space and mindset. A chance to declutter, refresh, and create room for what truly serves you.
Here’s how you can approach this bi-annual ritual following those three guiding keywords:
Care
Intention
Ease
Identify your Storage Space First
What space can you use to store the other season items? Choose shelves or containers that fit in the space! Make sure you visualise your plan before start moving items. And it doesn’t have to be fancy, maybe you’re simply using one area of your existing wardobe.
Be sure to include all your accessories and shoes, they are part of your closet.
Reflect & Review
Your season in review: start by taking a moment to evaluate your current wardrobe. Did you wear everything in the past 6 months? If not, why? If an item didn’t serve you this season, it likely won’t next year either. You might consider decluttering it now.
Before storing your summer/winter clothes away, put aside what needs to be cleaned or repaired. When you unpack them next year, you’ll be grateful for the effort. This is part of showing some ‘CARE’ for yourself and your belongings. Also, it’s wise to keep inter-seasonal items at hand, layering is key for winter! Only pack away items that you know won’t be useful in the next season.
Store & Label
Cool, dry, and sealed containers work best. Delicate pieces? Opt for breathable garment bags and ensure they’re folded or hung properly to avoid damage.
Label your containers clearly. Store what’s out of season accessible but tucked away; higher shelves are perfect as you won’t need to access those for a little while.
Welcome the Season with Intention
Welcome BACK! When unpacking your winter wardrobe, it’s time to reassess. Does everything fit? Does it still align with your style? If you’re unsure about certain items, try using colored stickers or put them away in an in-between box for those you want to reconsider and revisit them in a few weeks.
Mindful Decluttering & Circular Economy
As you declutter, think circular economy. Donate to charity shops, share/lend to friends, or sell items you no longer need. Before buying anything new, make a list and consider purchasing second-hand items that align with your style. Look for eco-conscious fabrics like organic cotton or linen that use less water and resources.
Action Plan: Practical Steps
→ Block some time for it: we recommend half-day (2 to 4 hours depending on the size). Make it an enjoyable task: put your favourite playlist and get into the flow!
→ Equip yourself with:
- Notepad (digital or pen & paper): jot down anything you need or think about (items you’re missing and you’d like to find, get-to-do items)
- Cleaning cloth: freshen up your storage space
- Storage containers: think tote bags, shoe bags, garment boxes, etc.
Sometimes, a simple seasonal swap might not be enough to bring that desired flow and connection to your wardrobe. The clothes we wear reflect who we are, and as we grow and change, our style naturally evolves.
Maybe you’ve felt one or more of these:
- No real flow in your closet: you have plenty of items, yet the pieces don’t work together, and it’s hard to decide what to keep or let go.
- Holding onto sentimental pieces: they represent moments, memories, or past versions of yourself, making it tough to let go.
- Feeling disconnected from your style: you’re ready to embrace a new look but aren’t sure where to start.
- Lacking time or energy: the idea of organising, finding new homes for unused pieces, or setting up a streamlined system feels overwhelming.
If any of this resonates, it’s absolutely normal!
As a Creative Organiser, I’m here to support you in this journey with step-by-step methods, and an encouraging, neutral perspective to help make those decisions easier. We would work together to create that wardrobe that feels cohesive, purposeful, and truly reflects who you are today.
